Many people every year are duped into becoming a Service Bureau with promises of riches from less work. A lot of these webinars only talk about the ability to charge a Service Bureau Fee and getting cheaper software based on volume. The truth is people following this model almost always fail, or spend all their efforts replacing lost customers because they are not equipped to support someone else's business and help them grow.
To be successful, you need to put the "Service" back in Service Bureau. Providing your customers with the support and knowledge to operate is just the beginning. You need to provide value beyond an extra fee bucket. You need the knowledge and capability to overcome all of the obstacles tax season throws at you and your customers. You have to be willing to learn new things, there will be new challenges.
